"Light Of Hope...": Xi's New Year Address To China Amid Covid Spike

President Xi Jinping said Saturday the "light of hope is right in front of us" as China faces an explosion of Covid-19 cases after an abrupt lifting of restrictions. Three years after the coronavirus first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan, Beijing this month began ditching its hardline containment policy known as "zero-Covid". Chinese hospitals have since been hit by a flood of mostly elderly patients, crematoriums have been overloaded and many pharmacies have run out of fever medications. "Epidemic prevention and control is entering a new phase... Everyone is working resolutely, and the light of hope is right in front of us," Xi said in a televised address for the New Year. It was the Chinese president's second time commenting on the outbreak this week. On Monday, he called for measures to "effectively protect people's lives". China on Saturday reported more than 7,000 new infections and one death linked to Covid out of its popu

"Good Neighbourly Relations Do Not Mean Excusing...": Minister On Pak

In a veiled attack on Pakistan, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday said that terrorism cannot be used as a tool to force India on the "negotiating table". While interacting with the Indian diaspora in Cyprus, without mentioning Pakistan, Mr Jaishankar said, "We will never normalize it. We will never allow terrorism to force us to the negotiating table. We want good neighbourly relations with everybody. But good neighbourly relations do not mean excusing or looking away or rationalizing terrorism. That we are very clear." "The second, of course, is our borders. And we have challenges on our borders. The challenges on the borders intensified during the Covid period. And you all know that today the state of our relations with China is not normal. They are not normal because we will not agree to any attempt to change the Line of Actual Control (LAC) unilaterally. Delhi's minimum temperature rose to double digits for the first time in 15 days on Friday, but the respite is predicted to end soon. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said icy winds from the Himalayas will bring the minimum temperature down by three to five degrees Celsius in the plains of northwest India. The officials told reporters that beginning on Jan. 5, all air passengers 2 years old and older will require a negative result from a test no more than two days before departure from China, Hong Kong or Macao. Passengers who test positive more than 10 days before a flight can provide documentation of recovery in lieu of the negative test result, the federal officials said. In an abrupt change of policy, China this month began dismantling the world's strictest COVID regime of lockdowns and extensive testing, putting its battered economy on course for a complete re-opening next year. The lifting of restrictions, following widespread protests against them, means COVID is spreading largely unchecked and likely infecting millions of peo
