"I Failed Pre-Meds": Kota Official To Students, Parents As Suicides Spike

Kota District Collector Dr Ravinder Goswami wrote to the NEET and JEE aspirants and their parents on Tuesday, citing his own example of failing the Pre-Medical Test several years ago. His letters came in the wake of the rising cases of suicides, with two incidents taking place within three days. Mr Goswami, an MBBS doctor before he became an IAS officer, said a failure is an opportunity to improve and turn it into success. He urged the parents to give a chance to their wards to improve their mistakes and not associate happiness of the children with the marks they obtain in exams. Quoting a motivating couplet from Urdu poet Sahir Ludhianvi, Mr Goswami began his address to the students with "Dear children" and noted that failures give one the opportunity to surmount the mistakes committed in life and turn the failures into success. The Collector noted that the exam is only a phase in life and not the ultimate goal and it cannot determine the direction of one's life. &q

IPL 2024 Playoff Qualification Scenarios After MI's Defeat Against LSG

Image
Mumbai Indians' playoff hopes were dealt a massive blow following their four-wicket loss against Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2024 on Tuesday. Marcus Stoinis slammed a gritty half-century after a solid bowling performance from the LSG bowlers to guide his team to victory. As a result, LSG moved up to the third position in the IPL 2024 Points Table with six wins and a Net Run Rate (NRR) of +0.094. However, MI's situation got worse as they remained ninth in the table with just 6 points from 10 matches. This means that MI will have to win all of their remaining four matches and they will have to depend of other results to go their way as wins in every match will only take them to 14 points. IPL 2024 playoffs qualification scenarios - Rajasthan Royals (Played 9, Won 8, Lost 1, Total Points 16, NRR +0.694) Inaugural champions Rajasthan Royals (RR) have been the most dominant team in IPL 2024. Revanth Reddy's Loan Waiver Promise With Bizarre Attack On KCR

Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy today reiterated his promise to waive farmer loans upto Rs 2 lakh, "come what may",. Then came a bizarre addition -- "even if KCR (his predecessor K Chandrasekhar Rao) were to die by hanging in his farm house, I will waive farmer loans by August 15," he thundered. Revanth Reddy was addressing a meeting in his Kodangal assembly constituency, which falls in his native Mahbubnagar constituency. His comments come on the eve of Mr Rao, the chief of Bharat Rashtra Samithi, starting his Lok Sabha campaign. The journey begins tomorrow by a special bus. Even before that, Mr Rao has been touring drought-hit districts, meeting with farmers in distress to tell them that they were much better off when he was Chief Minister. There was no shortage of water and farmers harvested plenty, he told them. Revanth Reddy's promise of waiving Rs 2 lakh loans of farmers before August 15 was made two days ago in Bhongir. Australia PM Calls Musk "Arrogant" Amid Row Over Sydney Stabbing Video Ban

An Australian court has ordered X to hide some posts commenting on the stabbing of a bishop in Sydney, deepening a war of words between the social media platform's owner Elon Musk and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. Australia's federal court late on Monday granted the country's cyber regulator, the eSafety commissioner, a two-day injunction requiring the social media platform to hide some posts on a knife attack last week against an Assyrian church bishop, Mar Mari Emmanuel, during a service at his church. Albanese on Tuesday hit out at Musk, calling him an "arrogant billionaire" for pushing back against the Australian government's calls to take down the content. X had blocked the content for its users in Australia but said it would not block the posts for users outside the country, arguing that the government had no authority to dictate content its users can see globally. Videos of the attack posted online showed the attacker, restrained by th

6.3 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Taiwan

-More than 80 earthquakes, the strongest of 6.3 magnitude, struck Taiwan's east coast starting Monday night and into the early hours of Tuesday and some caused shaking of buildings in the capital Taipei, the island's weather administration said. The quakes were centred on the largely rural eastern county of Hualien, where on April 3 at least 14 people died after a 7.2 magnitude temblor. Taiwan has been jolted by hundreds of aftershocks since then. The fire department in Hualien said early on Tuesday that a hotel which had already been damaged on April 3 and was no longer in operation was now slightly leaning on its side. However, there were no reports of any casualties. Taiwan lies near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes. More than 100 people were killed in a quake in southern Taiwan in 2016, while a 7.3 magnitude quake killed more than 2,000 people in 1999. Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has expressed confidence his party the Congress will win 14 of the 17 Lok Sabha seats in the state. Mr Reddy became Chief Minister in December 2023 after the Congress defeated K Chandrashekar Rao's Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS). "Every medicine has an expiry date," Mr Reddy told reporters in Karnataka's capital Bengaluru during an informal interaction, adding Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lose the Lok Sabha elections 2024. The Chief Minister did not tell whether his confidence comes from the party winning the assembly election in the southern state. The BJP and its ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) have been against the well-being and development of southern states, the Chief Minister alleged. "There is no warranty for Modi's guarantees," Mr Reddy said. He dared the Opposition BRS to win even a single seat in the Lok Sabha elections. The BJP may stand to gain from the votes that the BRS

Elon Musk Says "TikTok Should Not Be Banned In US"

Elon Musk on Friday came out against banning TikTok in the United States, even if it would mean less competition for his social media platform X, formerly Twitter, as the initiative sees fresh bipartisan momentum in Congress. The US House of Representatives is set to vote on Saturday on a bill that would force TikTok to divest from Chinese parent company ByteDance or face a nationwide ban. The measure, which has the vocal backing by many Democrats and Republicans, has also been written into a massive aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, which could ease its passage in both chambers of the US Congress. "TikTok should not be banned in the USA, even though such a ban may benefit the X platform," Musk said in a post on the social network he acquired in 2022. "Doing so would be contrary to freedom of speech and expression." A number of replies to Musk's comment on X expressed concern that a TikTok ban would set a precedent that could be used to target oth

US To Hit Iran With Fresh Sanctions Following Attack On Israel

The United States said Tuesday it would soon impose new sanctions on Iran's missile and drone program after its weekend attack on Israel, and that it expects its allies and partners to follow with parallel measures. US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan's announcement came after Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen indicated punitive measures were in the works, and European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said his office was working on it. Iran sent more than 300 missiles, drones and rockets at Israel over the weekend, in what it said was retaliation for a deadly strike on Tehran's consulate in Damascus. Nearly all of the projectiles were intercepted, and there was little damage. "In the coming days, the United States will impose new sanctions targeting Iran, including its missile and drone program" as well as the Revolutionary Guards and the Iranian defense ministry, Sullivan said in a statement. "We anticipate that our allies and partners will

Watch: Samson Draws Dhoni Comparison After Out Of This World Run Out

Not for nothing is MS Dhoni  the ultimate benchmark of unorthodoxy in cricket. Be it is batting style or his wicketkeeping prowess, nothing about Dhoni is traditional. The way he batted with innovative shots like the 'helicopter shot' made his batting look unusual but highly effective. The same can be said about his wicketkeeping. He had an unorthodox way of affecting run-outs as he did not garb the ball with both hands but instead used the ball's speed to direct it in the direction of the stumps. Trump "Wants To Take America Back To 1800s" On Abortion: Kamala Harris

Democrats came out swinging at Donald Trump on the divisive issue of abortion on Friday, blaming him for unpopular restrictions they said are turning back the clock on women's rights ahead of November's presidential election. Days after Arizona became the latest state to declare almost all abortions illegal, Vice President Kamala Harris told a rally the populist former president was the architect of the ban, and warned worse was to come if he wins the White House. "Here's what a second Trump term looks like:  More bans, more suffering and less freedom," Harris told supporters in Tucson. "Just like he did in Arizona, he basically wants to take America back to the 1800s. "But we are not going to let that happen because here's the deal: This is 2024, not the 1800s.
