A drone footage has emerged showing the moment a terrorist ran out of a building, firing his assault rifle, while the security forces engaged and neutralised him in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla on Saturday. Three terrorists were shot dead by the security forces on Saturday following an overnight gunbattle at Baramulla, with officials terming the operation a "significant success". In the operation at Baramulla's Chak Tapper Kreeri, three "hardcore" terrorists were shot dead and a large quantity of arms and ammunition were recovered, Commander of the Army's 10 Sector Rashtriya Rifles Brigadier Sanjay Kannoth said. The drone footage shows one of the terrorists running towards some trees near the compound wall of the house. He falls on the ground, and crawls a few metres before stopping, while more bullets punch holes on the concrete walls, raising a cloud of white dust. The operation marks a huge success for the security forces at a time when there

Prize Money Neeraj Earned After Closing 2024 Season With Narrow Misses

Just hits and no misses? Bayern Munich came agonisingly close to lifting the UEFA Champions League at home in 2012. The Bavarian giants had to settle for a runners-up medal before Jupp Heynckes' men ended their 12-year-long wait for a UEFA Champions League title in 2013. Pep Guardiola's Manchester City avenged their 2021 Champions League heartbreak against Chelsea by lifting the famous trophy with a narrow 1-0 win over Inter Milan in 2023. Even Team India witnessed a series of final heartbreaks in the lead-up to the epoch-making summit clash against South Africa in the Caribbean. No one remembers a runner-up or do they? It was at the Kuortane Games 2021 when javelin superstar Neeraj Chopra last settled for a place outside the top 2. On Saturday, Neeraj bagged another podium finish in his near-miss season as the two-time Olympic medalist came second only by 0.01m in the 2024 Diamond League final. Ex-India Star Says This 'Rolls Royce' Player To Replace Sarfaraz In 1st Test

India's squad for the 1st Test against Bangladesh, starting September 19, was announced last week with KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant making their much-awaited returns to the side. While Rahul played for India during the first two Test against England on home soil, Pant's last series in the whites for India, co-incidentally, was against Bangladesh in December 2022 before an unfortunate car accident accident sidlined him. With several senior players sidelined due to various reasons, Sarfaraz Khan made his much-awaited India debut against England and was an instant hit. The Mumbai batter scored 200 runs across five innings including three half-centuries while averaging 50 and scoring at a strike-rate of 79.36. However, former India batter Krishnamachari Srikkanth feels Sarfaraz will have to give his place back to KL Rahul. While offering his sympathy to Sarfaraz, Srikkanth pointed out that Rahul was injured and actually didn't lose his place. He also added that wicketkeeper-

Siddaramaiah Seeks 9-State Strategy Session On Central Funds Share

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to the Chief Ministers of eight states to get together for a strategy session to negotiate a better financial deal for states that contribute more to the Central coffers. Besides the four southern states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the list also includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana and Punjab. Mr Siddaramaiah argues that higher income states are being pensalised for their economic performance. The current system undermines cooperative federalism and threatens financial autonomy of progressive states, he said. His Kerala counterpart Pinarayi Vijayan has said they must stand together and fight, arguing that fiscal federalism is in threat. The letter comes ahead of the 16th Finance Commission's move to finalise criterion for devolution of Central funds. Already, finance ministers of Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Punjab have met in Thiruvananthapuram to build consensus on their recommendations

'Dhoni Had 4 Hundreds, This Guy Has 5': Ponting's Big "BGT" Warning To Aus

Indian cricket team wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant suffered a life-threatening car crash on December 2022. The 26-year-old sustained multiple injuries after his car rammed into a divider at the Delhi-Dehradun highway. However, Pant a remarkable comeback this year, featuring in competitive cricket for the first time since his accident during the Indian Premier League (IPL). He then played a key role in India's T20 World Cup-winning campaign in June. With India set to tour Australia for a five-match Test series later this year, Pant, just like he did last time, will have to play a key role for the team in the middle-order. Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has opened up on Pant's rise and hailed him as a match-winner. "We've all seen him play and heard him in the stump mic, he's an infectious character to have around the group. He loves his cricket, he's a winner, that's what he is. He doesn't just play to make a few runs and be out there for th

In Congress' 3rd Haryana List, 2 Leaders Who Had Already Filed Nominations

Releasing its third and biggest list for the Haryana Assembly so far, the Congress has named candidates for 40 of the state's 90 Assembly constituencies. The list includes Aditya Surjewala, who is the son of Congress' Rajya Sabha MP Randeep Singh Surjewala, as well as two people who had filed their nomination from the constituencies they wanted to represent even before their names were announced by the party.  With the third list released on Wednesday, the party has named candidates for 81 seats in all, leaving a question mark only on nine remaining seats. The announcement came on a day when the BJP released its final list of three candidates for the polls.  Aditya Surjewala has been fielded from the Kaithal Assembly constituency, from where his father and Congress General Secretary has been elected an MLA at least twice.  From the Palwal constituency, former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda's in-law Karan Dalal has been given a ticket and so has Vikas Saharan, son o

Live Updates: Donald Trump, Kamala Harris Face Off In 1st Televised Debate

In a pivotal moment for the US presidential election campaign, former President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Kamala Harris face off in their first televised debate shortly in Pennsylvania. Kamala Harris, 59, who holds a significant edge among women voters according to recent polls, is expected to challenge Trump on reproductive rights, especially given his recent, seemingly contradictory statements on abortion. Conversely, Trump will likely target Harris on issues such as the economy and immigration. The race for the White House between Kamala Harris, who is Black and South Asian, and Donald Trump appears to be neck-and-neck, with the latest polls showing Trump leading Harris 48% to 47% nationally. According to AFP, Harris has spent the past five days in intensive debate preparations, sequestered in a hotel. In contrast, the Trump team has indicated that the former president has taken a more relaxed approach in the lead-up to the debate. The debate is scheduled to last 90 m

2-Year-Old, Playing Outside Home, Crushed Under Wheels Of Neighbour's Car

A two-year-old girl was mowed down by a car while she was playing outside her house today in Uttar Pradesh. The toddler was sitting on the road when her neighbour's car approached her, she stood up when it came very close to her but the car hit her before she could move away, showed CCTV footage. The driver didn't stop even after the impact and crushed the girl under the wheels. She died on the spot. A motorbike was also seen passing her by before the car knocked her down. Her family - that has been living in the Barra 7 area of Kanpur for the last ten years - was inside the house as she lay motionless on the road covered in her blood. "He hit my child with his car and drove away. He should have taken her (to a hospital) for humanity's sake," said Rohit Singh, the girl's father. Mr Singh said that the car belonged to one of their neighbours. A crowd gathered at the spot as the police arrived to investigate the case. The accused and his car have been miss

India Test Squad: BCCI's Vice-Captaincy Decision Baffles Everyone

Amid the chatter around Jasprit Bumrah being potentially rested for the 2-match Test series against Bangladesh, the marquee pacer surprisingly found a place in the squad for the first Test. Wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant also marked his return to the Test side after nearly 20 months out as India announced their 16-man squad for the series opener on Sunday. While some big names returned to the squad, some prominent names missed out too. However, another decision from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee that raised eyebrows was the absence of a designated vice-captain.  When India took on England in their last Test assignment, Jasprit Bumrah was named the vice-captain. However, no such role was allotted by the selection committee this time, making fans wonder what changed.  Bumrah is seen as one of the leaders in the team, alongside the likes of KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, and Virat Kohli. While Kohli doesn't want to be officially given a leadership

New Covid Subvariant Could Lead To Major Increase In Cases, Report Reveals

As it spreads quickly throughout Europe, a recently discovered Covid-19 subvariant called XEC is drawing the attention of health authorities globally. XEC was first discovered in Germany, but reports of it have since spread to the Netherlands and other parts of Western Europe. Physicians and scientists are keeping a close eye on XEC, as it appears that it may eventually overtake the current dominant subvariant, KP.3.1.1. Right now in the US, this subvariant is the most common strain. According to a California-based physician speaking to the Los Angeles Times , XEC is "just getting started" and may take several weeks to months before it begins to significantly impact global and domestic case numbers. While XEC is "definitely taking charge" and appears to be the next prominent variant, experts caution that it will likely be months before it reaches high levels of prevalence. Mumbai College Which Rejected Gautam Adani Now Calls Him To Address Students

Gautam Adani had, in the late 1970s, applied to study at a Mumbai college but his application was rejected. He did not pursue education but turned to business and went on to build a $220-billion empire. About four-and-a-half decades later, he got called to the same college to deliver an address to students on Teachers' Day. Mr Adani had moved to Mumbai at the age of 16 and started working as a diamond sorter. Around the same time - in 1977 or 1978 - he applied for admission to the city's Jai Hind College. "But they rejected him," said Vikram Nankani, President of the Jai Hind College Alumni Association, as he introduced the Adani Group Chairman before the address. Mr Adani had applied to Jai Hind College because his elder brother, Vinod, had earlier studied there. "Fortunately or unfortunately, the college did not accept him and he went on to work full time and pursued an alternative career," Mr Nankani said, declaring Gautam Adani as a "deemed alumn

His remarks came after he was asked at a press conference on Wednesday about President Joe Biden's call to Prime Minister Narendra Modi after the latter's trip to Ukraine that was preceded by his visit to Moscow, and if he thought India could play a role in ending the war. Kirby said, "Any nation that is willing to try to help end this war and do so in keeping with President Zelenskyy's prerogatives, the Ukrainian people's prerogatives, his plan for a just peace, we would certainly welcome a role like that." Bengal Holds Lights Off Protest This Evening, "Reclaim The Night" Next

Image
Most of Kolkata went dark this evening as a mark of protest against the rape-murder of a young doctor at the RG Kar Medical College. It was also a unique display of the city's solidarity with the young doctors who have been on a protest since the horrific incident of August 9. This is expected to be followed by a "Reclaim the night" protest by women. Sharp at 9 pm, prominent landmarks of the city, like the Victoria Memorial and Raj Bhavan, plunged into darkness. Governor CV Ananda Bose also switched off the lights at Raj Bhavan to show solidarity. "When light is fear, darkness is dear," he said. Switching off lights at their homes, people hit the streets with burning candles. Large pockets across the state -- including twin city Howrah -- also witnessed spontaneous protests, with people marching with burning torches, candles and even cellphone torches. Chief Ministers Not "Kings": Supreme Court On Uttarakhand Appointment

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's move to appoint a controversial IFS officer as the director of the Rajaji Tiger Reserve, disregarding the opinions of the state's forest minister and others, has drawn strong reprimand from the Supreme Court. Heads of governments cannot be expected to be "old days' kings" and "we are not in a feudal era", said the Bench of Justices BR Gavai, PK Mishra and KV Viswanathan. The state government, however, told the bench that the appointment order was withdrawn on September 3. "There is something like a public trust doctrine in this country. The heads of the executive cannot be expected to be old days' kings that whatever they have said, they will do... We are not in a feudal era... Just because he is the chief minister, can he do anything?" the judges said. The bench also questioned why the Chief Minister has "special affection" for the officer, observing that a departmental proceedi

US To Award HP $50 Million For Semiconductor Technologies Project

The US Commerce Department said Tuesday it plans to award $50 million to HP to support the expansion and modernization of an existing company facility in Oregon that will boost key semiconductor technologies. The proposed funding will support technologies that serve life sciences instrumentation and technology hardware used in artificial intelligence applications and other projects, the department said. Congress in August 2022 approved a $39 billion subsidy program for U.S. semiconductor manufacturing and related components along with $75 billion in government lending authority and a 25% investment tax credit worth an estimated $24 billion. The projects build on HP's expertise in microfluidics and microelectromechanical systems with funding set to support manufacturing of silicon devices critical in life sciences lab equipment used in drug discovery, singlecell research, and cell line development. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo said the proposed $50 million funding for the Co

Video: Baby In Plastic Crate Carried By Men In Neck-Deep Andhra Flood Waters

Two men wading through neck-deep water, carrying a baby in a plastic crate - this was one of the scores of distressing scenes inflicted by the deluge in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The high-angle shot shows the infant in a yellow plastic crate placed on a foam board as the men trudged through the muddy waters in Andhra Pradesh's Vijaywada. The family had to move the baby out of their house as the floodwaters turned roads into rivers and waterlogged homes in the Singh Nagar locality like almost every other area in the city. Another video showed more than 200 cars - many of them luxury SUVs- submerged in the floodwaters in the city. As of Tuesday, 323 trains were cancelled in Vijayawada, 170 diverted and 12 partially cancelled. The torrential floods have killed 27 people in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and damaged properties with lakhs rescued and taken to relief camps. Many industries have also suffered massive losses due to the heavy rains. The Indian

Hostages Will Return "Inside Coffins" If Israel...: Hamas

Hamas's armed wing said on Monday that hostages would return to Israel "inside coffins" if military pressure continued, warning that "new instructions" had been given to the militants guarding the captives if Israeli troops approached. "(Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin) Netanyahu's insistence on liberating the prisoners through military pressure instead of concluding a deal will mean that they will return to their families inside coffins," Abu Obeida, spokesman for the Ezzedine Al-Qassam Brigades, said in a statement. "New instructions were issued to the mujahideen assigned to guard the prisoners regarding dealing with them if the occupation army approached their place of detention," he said, after Netanyahu earlier said the six hostages whose bodies were recovered at the weekend had been "executed". Be Humble, Sympathetic: Abhishek Banerjee's Advice To Party Amid Public Fury

Trinamool's second-in-command Abhishek Banerjee has issued a warning to party leaders: Do not to speak ill of anyone from the medical fraternity or civil society. The message on X comes amid multiple ugly comments by party leaders since his aunt and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had apparently urged them to "hiss". The Chief Minister has denied making any such comment, but that has apparently not convinced any of her party leaders.  "Public representatives across party lines need to be more HUMBLE and SYMPATHETIC. I urge everyone in @AITCofficial not to speak ill of anyone from the MEDICAL FRATERNITY OR CIVIL SOCIETY," the Diamond Harbour MP said. "Everyone has the right to protest and express themselves. This is what sets West Bengal apart from other BJP-ruled states," he added. Public representatives across party lines need to be more HUMBLE and SYMPATHETIC. I urge everyone in @AITCofficial not to speak ill of anyone from the MEDICAL FRATERNITY

World Very Impressed With India's Space Science Achievements: Rakesh Sharma

Indian Astronaut Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma (Retd.) on Sunday applauded India's achievement in space science and technology and said that the world is impressed with what India has done. Rakesh Sharma said that India has done scientific exploration very cheaply as compared to the others nations who spent a lot more for the same data. "I think the world is very impressed with what India has done. India has achieved success on their very first attempts both for Chandrayaan and for Mangalyaan. And it's wonderful. And now that Gaganyaan is around the corner," he said. "India has done scientific exploration very cheaply, so it's a very frugal space program that we run which everybody's envy because other nations are spending a lot more for the same kind of data which we are getting," Rakesh Sharma added. Speaking about the present scenario of space in India and the kind of developments achieved, Rakesh Sharma said, "During my time, there were j

"Killer Wolves" Of Bahraich Trigger Panic Killing Of Jackals In Bihar

The fear generated by the wolf pack of Bahraich is being felt in other parts of the country. After 8 people, including 7 children and a woman, were killed by wolves over around 45 days, neighbouring Bihar is seeing a panic reaction. In Bihar's Maksudpur, a jackal was brutally killed because of the fear generated by sensational reports of the "killer wolves" of Bahraich. The jackal -- spotted in the ruins of the Maksudpur fort -- created panic. The animal was cornered and beaten to death. This has left conservationists concerned about the reporting of such events. "Media has a huge responsibility to stop the spread of unnecessary panic... The recent spate of alleged killings of children by wolves in Bahraich and the extensive coverage it has got in national and regional media are responsible for such barbaric acts in places that are hundreds of kilometers away," said Dr Anish Andheria, President and CEO - Wildlife Conservation Trust. "There many wrong th
