Two spectators of Afghanistan origin were later ejected from the ground following the Pakistani team's complaint. Pakistan lost the match by 43 runs to suffer a 0-3 whitewash in the one-day series. Trump Tariff Effect: Stock Meltdown Fuels Worst Day At Markets Since Covid

Image
The "America First" trade is unraveling in the sweeping turmoil in global markets, with stocks acutely exposed to the US economy sinking alongside the dollar. As Wall Street's rebellion against Donald Trump's tariff war intensifies, traders are rushing into fixed-income havens. About $2 trillion was erased from the S&P 500, with the gauge down about 5%. The Russell 2000 of smaller firms extended its plunge from a 2021 all-time high to 20% on speculation the president's trade offensive will stunt the American economy. The greenback slid 1.5%, reigniting the debate about its haven reputation during challenging times as the euro, yen and Swiss franc surged. Oil joined a selloff in commodities. All in, the much-vaunted America-first trade - buying up assets that win when the US outperforms the rest of the world - is reversing on concern that the steepest increase in American tariffs in a century will hammer economic growth. That's driving a fierce rally in ...

US stocks plunged Thursday as traders reacted to Donald Trump's sweeping tariff announcement a day earlier, with the broad-based S&P 500 recording its biggest one-day decline since 2020. The widely watched Wall Street index closed down 4.8 per cent at 5,396.52 -- its worst trading day since June 2020. Trump's Tariffs Announcement Batters US Markets, S&P 500 Down Over 4%

The sell-off in Wall Street stocks deepened in mid-morning trading Thursday, with the S&P 500 losing more than four percent following US President Donald Trump's sweeping tariff announcement. Trump's broadly crafted new levies battered leading names in banking, technology, apparel and most other areas. Among the S&P 500's 11 sectors, only consumer staples was solidly in positive territory, with the other 10 in the red or nearly flat. Near 1510 GMT, the S&P 500 stood at 5,420.15, down 4.4 percent. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 3.7 percent to 40,644.74, while the tech-rich Nasdaq Composite Index plunged 5.7 percent to 16,591.55. The rout follows Trump's "Liberation Day" tariff announcement in which he unveiled a broad swath of new levies affecting all US trading partners. "Clearly what was announced was close to the worst-case scenario and markets were not prepared for that and are reacting accordingly," said Angelo Kourkafa...

Trump Announces 10% Baseline Tariff On All Imports To US

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he would impose a 10% baseline tariff on all imports to the United States and higher duties on some of the country's biggest trading partners, in a move that ratchets up a trade war that he kicked off on his return to the White House.  The sweeping duties would erect new barriers around the world's largest consumer economy, reversing decades of trade liberalization that have shaped the global order. Trading partners are expected to respond with countermeasures of their own that could lead to dramatically higher prices for everything from bicycles to wine. "It's our declaration of independence," Trump said at an event in the White House Rose Garden.  Trump displayed a poster that listed reciprocal tariffs, including 34% on China and 20% on the European Union, as a response to duties put on U.S. goods. Other details were not immediately apparent as Trump continued to make remarks that echoed his longstanding complain...

Asked To Wait A Year To Get Married, Man Stabs Woman, Kills Her Mother

Enraged at being asked to wait a year to get married, a man barged into a 20-year-old woman's home in Visakhapatnam, stabbed her and killed her mother when she tried to intervene.  Visakhapatnam Commissioner of Police Shanka Brata Bagchi said the man, Naveen, was in love with Nakka Deepika, 20, for the past six years. He wanted to marry the woman, but her father had asked him to wait for a year as he did not like his behaviour.  Around 12.30 pm on Wednesday, Naveen barged into Deepika's house in Swayamkrushi Nagar in Visakhapatnam's Kommadi area with a knife. He stabbed Deepika and also attacked her mother, Lakshmi, 43, when she intervened to try and protect her.  Lakshmi died on the spot while Deepika was rushed to a hospital, where her condition is said to be critical. Naveen fled immediately after attacking the women. After neighbours called the police, they began investigating, and a team arrested Naveen near Srikakulam district. After they were informed about the...

Australia "Won't Compromise" On 3 Areas Likely To Be Hit By Trump Tariffs

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his rival in a May election, Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton, said they would stand up for the country's national interests in the face of looming US tariffs that could hit Australian beef. Australia has a trade surplus with the United States, and a free trade agreement that allows duty-free entry for US exports. Albanese has said his government won't retaliate against the Trump Administration with reciprocal tariffs. Toughening his language in an election campaign, Albanese said on Wednesday he would "stand up for Australian interests", and would not compromise on Australian regulations that are likely to be targeted by the United States. Opposition Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton similarly told reporters: "My job is to stand up for Australians."  "If I needed to have a fight with Donald Trump or any other world leader to advance our nation's interests, I'd do it in a heartbeat," Dutto...

As India-China Ties Turn 75, New Delhi Reminds Beijing Of "Lessons" Learnt

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri was the chief guest at the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi, which organised an event to celebrate 75 years of establishing India-China ties. Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong and the Indian Foreign Secretary cut a cake on the occasion before speaking about the relations between the two Asian giants. In his nearly seven-minute speech, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted the "lessons" for both nations to keep in mind in order to foster stronger ties. He began his speech by saying, "Even tough, as modern nation states, we have had only 75 years of formal ties, India and China have shared cultural and civilizational ties and people-to-people contacts going back millenia." He spoke about significant "contributions by personalities such as Bodhidharma, Kumarajiva, Xuanzang, and Rabindranath Tagore," towards fostering historical India-China relations. He added that "Our two civilizations have, each in their own unique way, p...
